Cake and Cuddles

Thank you for The Birthday Wishes. We had a really good day and that night MT gave me a birthday present of sleeping 9 hours. I was actually very grateful for 7 of them and then spent 2 hours pacing - finally I decided to wake him up and make sure he was ok. *which he was but I apparently am overly paranoid with certain things*

We are going to our first bf mom's infant support groups at the hospital I delivered at in the morning at 10. I am excited to go and see how I do amongst others that are moms and have children MT's age. It will be my first meet/greet mom style. It's a weird territory for me. I called a friend to make sure I was supposed to bring MT with me. I didn't want to show up kid in tow and find out that childs are not supposed to be in tow ... *i know i know ... I am learning.. E says it's a B.Y.O.B Party (he can't decide if the last B is bo.ob or baby) Yes yes I know he is not RIGHT .. MT and I have been working on our bf'ing. I say we have about 2 good latches a day. We are trying and not giving up he is gettin the hang of it. We actually nursed from both sides today. He is a one side only kind of bf-er - But it's progress.

Ok calling all seasoned/newly/wise/experienced/nonexperienced/etc. Mom's/or women with ideas - The past 2 days we have had some really clingy/crying hours. From about 10am-2pm he has decided to only nap if I am holding him, and if i put him down he does this cry like he is being squeezed in a vice and twisted. It's awful. Before 2 days ago .. he would go from a whine to a whimper and if not fast enough to meet his "needs" then a cry like you are squeezing the ever loving breathe out of him ... Now we skip all whine/fus/whimper and go straight to the death cry .... I have found that the paci works WONDERS .. (until it falls out or he pulls it out) ..shhsing also works .. I absolutely have to keep the paci in his mouth or else .... We are now repeating this lil "exercise" as we speak ....... he is in the swing, i just have to make sure the paci stays in .... he is fed, changed, burped, clean, no fever ...... any ideas? this a familiar phase to anyone?

this cute lil face is who I'm referring about:

Baby S has "fussy time" in the evening. Have you read "The Happiest Baby on the Block?" It sounds like you might have, but I am not sure.

My pediatrician said lots of babies have "fussy time" and there is really nothing to do but hold them until they outgrow it. Think of it as bonus cuddle time!

MT is so very cute! I think I would like a piece of that cake, too!

first of all-happy birthday! Now I remember those first 4 months just from reading your post! Good thing, since I'm due with my second in early October. My first is only 21 months but, I already seemed to have forgotten how it all began. He was the same way: had to hold him (up on my shoulder), wouldn't nap unless I was strolling him or holding him, lots of shushing and swaying and swaddling, nothing worked for more than 10 minutes (swing, bouncer, etc) I even spent a lot of time standing in front of the kitchen sink with the water running because the sound made him stop crying. But, as everyone told us, it will all change by the 3rd (or 4th) month. And, like magic, it did. The crying stopped, he's slept through the night since then and went from being a really fussy, crying all the time, baby to the "happiest baby on the block" (so to speak!) They do outgrow it. good luck and he is so adorable!

I can't help you with the baby stuff yet but I am sure you will be able to help me when my time comes. I think the pictures are adorable, and he really does look like he wants to eat the cake!

It could be he's going through a growth spurt. T is much fussier and wants holding more and to eat more every so often and it does seem to coincide with growing. He goes back to normal after a few days.

Glad you had a nice birthday.

Sorry I have no assvice or knowledge about the fussiness stage.

He is so freakin' cute! Have you tried the book Happiest Baby on the Block? It gives you 5 S's to try- Swaddle, Shhhhh, Suck, Sway, Side those really work for T but might not in a few weeks. We have been using the pacifier like a champ lately too but always try to swaddle first since T really likes that. Good luck!!!

YES, we have that issue a lot. Putting Brooklyn in her sling helps us, also holding her against me (facing me) to where the paci stays in her mouth. There are days when I can't get much done bc she only wants to be held....I try to remind myself that it's okay bc I am getting to snuggle her and she won't be this small for very long!

I had/have the same problem with my little ones. It seems to go along with his growth spurts, and I think at about 5-6 weeks, a lot of babes hit a growth spurt. I just go ahead and hold/cuddle becasue I know he won't let me in due time. Good luck and Happy Birthday!

From what little experience I have, I think all babies have a fussy period. Ours are at night. I just hold her until she is asleep enough to be put down. I know this is not practical during the day or every day. And yes, a paci does wonders if they keep it in. Hopefully he will grow out of it soon or you will figure out what is bothering him if anything. Maybe he just likes to be held.

He is absolutely adorable.

I have zero ad- or ass-vice for you on the MT front. Poor you. (I'd say poor him, but I'm sure he's fine. You're the one suffering when he does that heartbreaking cry.)

He sure does look like he wants that cake! Who can blame him, though. :-)

His red hair is so cute!

Oh I love the "me want cake" pictures... so cute! I am glad you had a nice birthday.

Only thing that I know of was as far as keeping the paci in place and you may already know about this... another friend of mine uses them and says they are great.... http://www.wubbanub.com/

Maybe that will help? Have a nice weekend!

OMG HE IS SOOOOO CUTE!!!!!

- I did the same marathon-sleep thing to my mom when I was a baby, she still talks about it to this day.

- Little V. at 9 weeks is just getting over having to be held to sleep. Since last week she's been able to sleep in the bassinet or bouncy chair without someone holding her - what a relief. I think it is probably a growth-spurt related phase.

- I love reading your blog because I can relate to so much of what you write about!

Awesome photos! And the BYOB I love it - once again I think your husband and mine share a brain because that is totally something Jason would say. And then I would laugh and tell him he's nuts. I'm so glad you had a nice birthday and I hope some of these knowledgable mamas chime in with some helpful answers. Remember them all for me okay? I'm sure I'll be asking you them later this fall, LOL!

Since he likes to be held so much he might really love a sling and it would make your life easier. Have you looked into trying one? I have the Maya Wrap and it is nice because it is adjustable. Also see if you can rent/borrow/buy the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD, it's really great!!! Good luck!

No advice to offer here, but MT is just too darn cute. :)

Sorry, I have no advice or assvice on this one. I don't know what I would do!! I know you'll get it worked out - looks like lots of good advice in these comments.

MT is just adorable. You must be so proud!!!!!! Hope your class goes well. What does the B stand for? :-)

that's great you're giving breastfeeding a go! My baby came a month early so I was pumping and bringing milk to the NICU and supplementing with formula; once she got home I was just pumping and it was so exhausting on top of feeding her bottles at the same time... it was hard to get the hang of breastfeeding but we recently did and it takes out that extra step of pumping/bottles, which is nice when you're sleep deprived... happy birthday!

Happy Birthday Month (that helps with being a bit late)!
Babies do have growth spurts around 3wks, 6wks, 3mos & 6 mos. It's fairly easy to remember, and yet I still forget til each go through it! For having everything taken care of, ie, feeding, clean, burped (don't forget lingering burps), etc. I find that giving them extra attention during the wake times sorta "fills" their hug/cuddle needs for when they go to sleep. Each baby is different, so it's always a try and find out for yourself what works.
Don't stress about it...that only makes it seem worse. Relax & think about enjoying it, it really is fleeting and you'll come out the other side experienced and seeing how it was not a big deal after all!
Blessings,
Mrs.C.
