Here Kitty Kitty

Fun w/pets preparing for baby speak

A few bloggers have written about preparing their fur babies for the arrival of a baby. I got to thinking about my cats.

I have a black cat (onyx) that is persnickety as all get out. She only loves me - but she only loves me when She decides to. She absolutely hates E. He has done nothing to her, but her hate is strong. She is smart and totally understands the English language. We have had her the longest.

I also have a grey tiger. (sterling) She is fun loving and sweet. She is a pretty lil thing. She loves us both. Only problem, She is so dumb and dopey.

So they were both in the room with us Friday night and we loaded up a few good videos from thattube site and turned up the laptop speakers. I figured they'd both freak out like they do when someone comes over. They run and hide for hours. Nope - Onyx turned her ears back and gave me the "annoyed kitty" look a few times. "Like Dude, the TV is too loud." Then she got pissed off and pranced out of the room. Sterling, on the other hand, was intrigued. She was sniffing the laptop looking back and forth and E and I. Then we got to a crying baby. Her motherly instincts kicked in or something. She wanted to save the laptop. She looked and looked for the crying baby and was in distress and was trying to tell us that there was something going on. She would look back and forth at us like "Fix it. Make it ok." She was patting the laptop and looking around the room.

I honestly assumed they would both pull the annoyed card and move on. But to see sterling get all interested, it was sweet and alarming. She still has her claws ... that may have to change. All in all a fun and entertaining exercise.

I was looking at pictures of progression last night and look what I found. These are 10 weeks apart.

I know, it's hard to think about what the furbabies will have to say about this baby business. They've been the kids for so long. I think dogs adjust easier than cats, but as we have both, we'll have to take it slowly.

And LOOK AT YOU, FARAH! You gorgeous pregnant thing, you!

It is interesting to see the side by side comparison of your belly pics.

Fur babies often do the unexpected. Glad you are trying to prepare the furkids early. It sounds cute with Sterling trying to bat the computer and let you know something is amiss.

I have a black kitty and a grey kitty too! I always wonder how they will react to a baby because they do not care for toddlers at all! But, it might be different once they have one at home all the time.

Wow! What a difference! The little one is growing so quickly!

And thanks for your comments on my blog. Losing a job is hard, but it's comforting to know there are people on 'my side' *hugs*

We have 3 cats and a dog.
Do you have any friends with an infant that can stop by. That's a big test. It's not just the crying, but the way they move.

I've babysit friends kids enough.. mine all scatter.

My Contessa will sometimes wander over and sniff a bit, but if it moves, she's gone again.

I wouldn't worry too much about nails. Honestly, even if the cat DESPISES the baby (which is unlikely) the worst they're likely to do is swat-and-run.

Growing up, we always had a zoo in the house.. Inevitably I had a scratch or two. Just builds immunity. ;)

What a terrific idea to use theirtubbe :) to find baby sounds to lure the pets! I will have to try that out on the pups! I read your previous posts and I can't believe how alike our pregnancies are. We are practically due date buddies with your date moving up! (I am the 28th) and I also wake up at those same times every night. Weird! BTW- you look beautiful at 27 weeks!!!!

Number 1, you look beautiful!!!

Number 2, the pets - we've put a lot of thought into this. We're going to purchase a baby doll that cries really loud, and during he last bit I'm going to walk around the house with it so the puppy gets used to the attention being put somewhere else and the sound. We're also taking her to obedience lessons in the next two months, which should help a lot. The cats I'm not to sure about, I'm hoping the doll will help with that. It's also been suggested to set everything up and wrap it all in saran wrap which was suggested by a friend who this worked for. That way if the cats do for some reason try and jump into the crib or bassinet, (like the curious little things often do hehe), they won't go through which will hopefully curb the curiosity when the baby is here, you know, nothing interesting here ect. Don't know how well it'll work but that's the ideas we have lol.
Your kitties sound cute, love their names too!
Take care hon!

Visiting from Meli's Belly blog and wanted to say your post was funny! I love cats and your Sterline seems so sweet!!! My g'ma had a cat that was very maternal as well.

How funny and timely! We played the crying baby clip at beprepared.net for Oscar one day last week and he was walking all over my husband's desk around the iMac trying to find the crying baby. It was hilarious! I'm not sure he wanted to mother it, though, he probably wanted to bite it!

That cracks me up about the kitties! Of course Onyx was a you-know-what. That's just how she is. Haha! I am truly shocked by Sterling, though. Silly kitty.

Look at how much more baby your showing! Wow! You look so wonderful!!!!!

I'm not sure why you feel huge now. Your growth looks normal and controlled over that 10-week span to me! You look like a perfect size for 27 weeks!

I LOVE your experiments with preparing the felines. My dog freaks out when he hears babies cry on tv. I have seen my cat with a baby and he was ok. But your idea is brilliant! I think I may steal it, in fact.

As for the "oh shit" moment, I am expecting that to happen around 20 weeks. I had glimmers of it a few weeks ago but it disappeared. And then the scare earlier this week made it a distant memory and put me back in a disbelief stage. But I know it will return. And I have been looking to your experience as a guide. :-) Seriously, though, it is completely normal and something that I bet happens to all pregnant women!!

I am already stressing about the work that needs to be done in the nursery. Mr. LIW has many weekendss open but that's no guarantee that he won't be rushing at the last minute. In fact, I am quite certain that he will be painting as I am packing my bag for the hospital. :-)

Everything will come together.....at least I hope so because I am looking to you for proof of that. Just kidding!

XOXO

Aw, sterling's reaction is so cute!

I'm worried about my persnickety shih tzu sammy... she was Jeff's dog since she was a pup and it took her 3 years to stop bitting my feet after I came into the picture. Now I adore her but I wonder how she's going to feel about a baby!
